Richard Seymour + Dick Powell: Designing dream machines

This video focuses on the real life experiences of industrial designers and gives us insight of the kinds of up and downs that we as designers will need to experience to become true designers.

Many lessons can be learnt from this video as working with other designers can be a fun and an enjoyable experience when developing new products but while at it, we must also still consider the consumers in which we are designing for.

Furthermore, it isn't until designers truly have the passion to design with a determined will and purpose that they will produce products that will give pleasure to both the designer themselves and the people who will use the products.

Annie Leonard: The story of stuff

Watching this video made me feel like I was back in history and geography class while still studying in high school only difference was that it wasn't as bad as those classes. There was a lot there to take in but it was all quite interesting and true. It also made me realize how the manufacturing and consumer industry works around the world because as a young consumer myself, I spend my time buying things unconciously sometimes.

So with the help of this video, it made me realize how much the world needs to change in its production and disposing of products that have been developed for consumers. It also makes me feel quite guilty as being a victim of corporate companies whose purpose is only to make its consumers spend, spend, and spend even more without caring for where it all comes from and where it goes to afterwards.

Ross Lovegrove: The power and beauty of organic design

This video absolutely opened up my mind and transported me into a new and facinating world of organic design. It felt like I was taken away from the industrial world we know of today and being teleported into a future world of new and out of the world discoveries and technologies.

There was just too many ideas and images that were packed into just twenty minutes which made me want to grasp for more! From Lovegrove's water bottle, then to his sculptures and then lastly to his studio which absolutely blew my mind!

His design of the water bottle looks absolutely unique and stunning as it highlights the rich environment of which water comes from and creates with its high and rich qualities that it displays. Then his table in which its legs come down from the table itself was just boggling!

But he saved the last for least as his studio exhibits and new and profound world of pure genius and imagination that in which highlights the profound qualities of organic design.

Therefore from this video I had learnt many things such as the shapes and design of organic design and how precious and vital that is it for industrial to incorporate the qualities of the organic world into the future of design.

Project Three: Upcycling Unwanteds

For this assignment I chose to design a picture frame stand that targets anyone who is wanting to have a new and unique way of displaying their photo frames in their living spaces.

To achieve this, I started by visiting 'reverse garbage' where I went to find some materials in order to come up with an idea of what to make. It was here that I found objects such as discards cd cases, vinyl records, and empty film reels, and lots of mosaic left over tiles. These objects gave me the idea to make picture frames out of the cd cases and the mosaic tiles. It wasn't until I found the bamboo stick that I came up with the idea of creating a stand to place the picture frames in. Therefore, the final idea was to make a picture frame stand using all the objects that I found and create this product.

So the way in which it works is that once you place the picture frames in between the vinyl records, you are able to turn the vinyl record around which reveals the other picture frames that are located on the other side. So picture this, you walk into your friends house and notice them having this picture frame stand. You then go and take a look at it and try to turn the vinyl records around. When you do, you would find a nice surprise of having to see more photos of your friends which were kind of hidden on the other side.

The final design ties in with a vintage concept that tries to show how discarded objects can be turned into something much more useful.

Flat Packed CD Rack

For this assignment, I chose to design a flat packed CD rack which targets all music lovers. Its main purpose is to be able to be put anywhere in the house or living space so that the user is able to change the position of the cd rack whenever he/she gets bored of the existing position.

The first initial design was to make the cd rack hangable from wall which is something you don't see everyday. But then just one wouldn't be enough so I decided to add more cd racks so that they hang from the ceiling. Although after consultation, I came to realise that by having it like this, cds will easily fall out of the rack. Thus, making this design very bad and annoying.

In the end I decided to make the cd rack so that it lies normally on a flat surface. There was to be two cd racks that would be joined to make one large cd rack to provide more space to store cds.

The sheet material that I have chosen to use for the cd rack is polypropelene as it very bendable and can form into a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Whereas the fasteners that I used to join each piece together was press studs as it is very strong and durable which prevents the cd rack to collapse or fall apart.

Therefore the transformation from 2D to 3D is very easy as you only need to connect the press studs together although it can be quite time consuming with the amount of press studs that will need to be connected with one another. But nevertheless, I hope this product would satisfy the user if they were to receive it in the mail XD.
