Project Three: Upcycling Unwanteds

For this assignment I chose to design a picture frame stand that targets anyone who is wanting to have a new and unique way of displaying their photo frames in their living spaces.

To achieve this, I started by visiting 'reverse garbage' where I went to find some materials in order to come up with an idea of what to make. It was here that I found objects such as discards cd cases, vinyl records, and empty film reels, and lots of mosaic left over tiles. These objects gave me the idea to make picture frames out of the cd cases and the mosaic tiles. It wasn't until I found the bamboo stick that I came up with the idea of creating a stand to place the picture frames in. Therefore, the final idea was to make a picture frame stand using all the objects that I found and create this product.

So the way in which it works is that once you place the picture frames in between the vinyl records, you are able to turn the vinyl record around which reveals the other picture frames that are located on the other side. So picture this, you walk into your friends house and notice them having this picture frame stand. You then go and take a look at it and try to turn the vinyl records around. When you do, you would find a nice surprise of having to see more photos of your friends which were kind of hidden on the other side.

The final design ties in with a vintage concept that tries to show how discarded objects can be turned into something much more useful.

  1. I get the concept of making it display your photos when you spin the record deals like a slide show. Good design and concept but i'm more concerned about the engineering part of the product, for instance will the bamboo be tilting side to side when you spin the records? is it stable when the frames are being placed onto the spinning records?? But it is a good concept if it was little bit more developed i can see this as a sucessful product

  2. I liked several aspects of this piece. 1.The fact that it was made in the round. Many shelving/ display unit are only viewable from one angle. 2.Unusual choice/combination of materials.
The idea is interesting but the prototype model was disappointing. It could have been better finished.

  3. I agree with the previous comments that the prototype was not executed to the best of levels. However, the concept is one which is fun and entertaining and with some more refinement could be a really nice product. Perhaps if it had a heavier base you could store more than just photos on it. Otherwise well done.

  4. i can't imagine how to creat a picture frame stand by using these materials before watching your design.the idea is quite interesting.i m pretty sure it could be pretty good if the model was developed a little bit more.

  5. The idea of your design is creative and interesting. i like the concept of you make these un-useful material to be an picture frames. but my concerned is that when you spin around the pictures holder the picture frame will easily fall down make be you can develop a little bit this part, if so that will be very good and useful design.

  6. I like the material, and the idea behind the project is creative and interesting. However the picture frame could be accidently pushed and fall down, so I think the base need to be re-designed.
